“My volunteer experience with Paz y Esperanza gave me a tremendous opportunity to see first-hand, the common problem of access to justice, which too many Peruvians face.  I was fortunate to work alongside individuals who displayed a daily passion and commitment to being advocates for those whose voices are not heard."

“I remember stepping off the plane that cool evening in May and suddenly wondering what in the world I was doing in such a new context all by myself. I was nervous about working at the shelter, forming relationships, and confronting issues of injustice, power, and abuse. However, as I lived, laughed, and loved among the people for six months, I began to realize how God had provided for me in such incredible ways.

By the end of my time in Peru, it became exceedingly clear that my amazing Peruvian brothers and sisters had helped me to truly uncover my passion for psychology, justice, and peace. After my experience at La Casa de Buen Trato Hovde, I'm nearly busting with excitement as I look forward to a career in psychology. With my experience at La Casa Del Buen Trato Hovde, I have been able to ground the abstract concepts that I learned in school, ask creative questions, and work with excitement. I am so thankful for the work that God is doing through the hands of our Peruvian brothers and sisters."

“I learned a lot in my first practical internship.  It has been an important part of my academic and professional development.  Helping people has always been important to me.  Above all, I am very interested in everything that relates to human rights and protection of children and adolescents.  I hope to do my thesis in this area of human rights.  Thus, this hands-on experience helps me as I prepare to write my thesis.”

Thank you to all of our volunteers of 2012!

“Through volunteering with Paz y Esperanza, I learned a lot from the wisdom and experience of the committed workers. Also, I had the opportunity to learn about another Latin American country and culture, and build bonds and connections with other Latin Americans and organizations.  This experience is vital to my continued personal and professional growth.  I hope to apply what I learn and experience to various social work and policy development projects we are working on in Colombia, from the perspective of integral mission.”

“Personally, I hope to grow in self-confidence and in my identity as a daughter of God, part of the family of God.  As a Christian, I am part of much bigger story than my own, and I have the responsibility to participate in the world around me.  Professionally, I hope to increase my skills and understanding within Psychology and to learn how to use my profession to serve others.  As a young woman, I want to experience what it’s like to live in Peru, whose culture and people are different by similar to Colombia.  I want to fully embrace each new person and experience I face with the strength God provides.”
